DES gets real with new proofing system

DES launches a new dedicated UV-based digital proofing system for the packaging market.

The new system is called RealProof and is based on a Mimaki inkjet print engine with an EFI front end and integration by DES to suit the local packaging market. Using UV-curable inks, the proofing system can handle all standard packaging substrates such as PET, polyethylene, metallised polyester, polycarbonates and shrink film as well as rigid substrates up to 2mm thick (suitable for folding cartons).

Russell Cavenagh at DES said the new system would deliver "a better proof at a substantially lower cost" compared to existing proofing methods for the packaging sector.

"There is a big hole in the market for accurate packaging proofing, particularly on the actual substrates used," he commented.

Developed in consultation with local packaging producers, RealProof has been designed specifically to match the requirements of packaging output, for instance by including white ink and the ability to do reverse side printing. The seven-colour system has a maximum media width of 640mm and, in its reel-to-reel mode, is suitable for continuous unattended operation.

Another potential market is for product samples enabling designers to produce short-run mock-ups for testing and product shoots. The fact that the RealProof can print on the actual substrate to be used in the manufacturing process is seen as a major advantage compared to existing systems that can only output onto conventional proofing stocks.

The EFI Colorproof XF front end allows for both contone and screen proofs, and with a maximum resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi, enables exceptionally fine detail to be reproduced accurately for bar-coding elements and small print.

DES will supply the RealProof system as a complete package, including inks, throughout Australia and New Zealand with full support and training. The system works with standard layout software such as InDesign and Illustrator files as well as Esko/ArtWork Systems.
